Overhyped & Disappointment at the Rose & Crown, Wimbledon Village

From the unexciting photo and the lack of photos I have of this meal, I think we know this isn’t high on my list of recommendations.

The venue seems like it’d be nice, it’s in Wimbledon Village (and priced accordingly!! Be warned.) and is an atmospheric odd, traditional pub setting with hotel rooms above.

This is where it ends, the food took 40mins to arrive (just starters), then arrived at random and erratically different times, one of three of us had finished and had their plate taken away before the other two’s food had even arrived. One of us even having the same dish as the one that arrived: the pictured bland fishcake. One dish was incredibly hot (comforting from a food safety side) but then made the other dish that had clearly been left out and had gone cold seem significantly worse.

We braved our way through and waiting another 20 mins from the second round of starters arriving for the mains to arrive. They all arrived within five minutes of each other this time. A pleasant surprise.

Although not being vegan or veggie, I do sometimes stray into picking the veggie alternative when it comes to a roast, so thought the Cauliflower, Beetroot & Chestnut Crumble sounded like an interesting and tasty option.

Nope.

It was a mushy pile of what was the illegitimate love child of a crap cauliflower cheese and a dry crumbling suet dumpling. Again, strangely different temperatures to different parts of the dish and overall just a disappointing and overhyped ‘Sunday Roast Special’!

Would not recommend, despite it sounding promising. Plus when you start working out the economy of how much they charge for their roasts (~£22 meat options, £17 for the crumble monstrosity), you start to question whether it’s just the location that’s keeping their name out there…
