Middle of the road at The Crown & Cushion, Blackwater

Meh. I can’t complain too much as I’ve been back to dine her two or three times in the last few years, but nothing wild to write home about.

Pretty generic and chain-ish menu, but a huge huge variety so will definitely be a safe bet for anyone to go for a family meal, or an occasion that’s not too special. Which is a shame, because it’s part of the Barons Pubs company which has some really really good choices amongst them.

The scary thing is that they have a wedding hall attached to the back which both intrigues and depresses me as it doesn’t seem like a particularly celebratory venue – but if anyone would like to invite me to their wedding there…I’m willing to be proven wrong.

So over the few times I’ve been, there wasn’t anything particularly memorable but from memory:

a strange fetish, but I do love a courgette fritter. Something about the crispy/chewy texture mix just sings to my soul. They were a little oily and soggy but the mint yoghurt dip and pomegranate seeds did add a bit of interest.

the Tiger Prawn Lollipops were actually really enjoyable. Again, nothing extreme either way but were good size prawns and were flavoursome enough.

But, you may see from many of my reviews, I do seem to skew heavily towards Goat’s Cheese Salads in a weird twist of fate. Really tasty, good portion of cheese, the honey, walnuts & mediterranean veg were all good and added to the whole dish. If you’re also a Goat’s Cheese pervert, I can recommend this one.

All in all, wouldn’t tell anyone to avoid the place but not queuing up to go back there. Very pedestrian and mass-produced but safe.
